8/16/2023 0 Comments Equality of outcome![]() ![]() When I combine my recognition of free will, the role of Fortune and luck in the world, my own privilege and recognition of how little I've earned, the unachievable nature of equality of opportunity, and the ease of ensuring basic outcomes and needs being met, this is where I come to. We must make sure that people have access to the same opportunities to succeed wherever we can while also recognizing that some people in their life circumstances and experiences will not be able to take advantage of those opportunities and protecting them is important as well. However I think that recognizing that and recognizing the fact that we have to balance the competing interests of individual people as well as the progress of society as a whole makes it so that we must have a fair balance of equality of opportunity and equality of outcome. Equality of opportunity is not an achievable thing by any metric. Much of my ethos around this also comes from Sam's guest Michael Sandel do who talked about tyranny of genetics, luck and opportunity. Education, housing, and healthcare are great examples of things that are outcomes that set the next stage of what opportunities are available, most definitely so for education (which is, for any reasonable person, an opportunity and an outcome) One generation's outcome is the next generations opportunity, and even for just one person, their own outcome in one stage of life sets the opportunities available to them. I'm posting this to see if anyone can convince me not to. I support equality of outcome and equality of opportunity.
